I wouldn’t install it right away, I’ve been part of the early release thingy.. aaand.. well.. It looks great and all that. But my touchpad won’t work.

I have my touchpad turned off since I basically use my laptop as a portable desktop anyway. Any issues outside of that for you? I don’t really care for 8.1, so I’m looking forward to getting my start button and menu back.

Why not just force the update? There’s a gizmodo article about it. Comes from Microsoft so it’s not a shady workout. I did it last night and everything is working great

Nah, no issues other than that really, but since I often travel with my laptop it’s a HUGE problem (well, it would be if I didn’t have 5 other laptops/macbooks).

It’s a cheap Acer Aspire, So I’m guessing it’s an ELAN.

Meh, I’m sticking to 7 until all the games I enjoy are available on a Linux distro. Then I’m out for good. I have no desire to use any new Microsoft products.

the better question should be how old? Maybe something wonky with localization.

2014 model Acer Aspire, I bought it just to install Win 10 and learn how to use Win 10.

Yeah, and Microsoft is Microsoft and can’t be bothered answering me. There’s a reason I mainly use Unix based OS. But since Win 10 will be the new thing I better learn it, my customers will probably need some help with it, but this has got me stymied.

A chime rings out at Microsoft customer service somewhere in India

“Sir, we got a new request for help.”

“I can see that, where is it from.”

“It’s that Norwegian again sir.”

(the manager now visibly nervous and sweating) "Just, uh, set it to the side..."

Hehe, the funny thing is that this is the first time in 15 years I’ve been unable to fix something myself.

Too lazy/inept to be bothered forcing something. I’d rather wait and do it the easy way with less risk of effing everything up than get in over my head and end up with a bricked laptop that needs to be recovered.

Don’t game and use the computer for work stuffs. Windows it is. I can see the appeal of Linux, but can’t be arsed to learn to deal with it. I like my computer stuff to work with minimal knowledge necessary on my end.

Drat, I can’t annotate your picture. Was going to point out that something looks strange there. Do the keys map OK from Apple to Windows? IIRC Apple has some wonky keys like the Command key.

I installed Ubuntu on my (73 year old) dad’s windows laptop because he was tired of all the bullshit. He loves it and has had no issues using it. If you’re going to use your computer for surfing the web and normal word processing then you really have no need to use windows.

The only reason I can see someone needing windows over linux (if not for gaming)is if they need to use specific applications like Adobe photoshop or things along those lines that don’t run on Linux yet.

I literally wanted to destroy my Linux AMD rig after 3 months of use. You could probably tell what happened - plus the anger when I found out my community center switched over to OpenSUSE.

Fun fact, when I hit the Windows key, I’m thinking “Open Apple” in my head. It’s not even quite the right placement, but I guess close enough for my brain.

MS Office, specifically Outlook, Excel and Access plus QuickBooks. I’ve not really had any issues with Windows in XP, 7 or 8.1. I just don’t particularly care for the lack of the start button/menu in 8.1 and the fact that some things that should be easy are a PITA because of the lack of a start menu that shows you all the installed programs.

I’d give all the reasons to not upgrade OS haphazardly (windows, mac, etc.) but I can already see everyones eyes starting to glaze over because you all will do whatever you want. :P

And I’m fine with that. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you....
